Deep Water Culture (DWC)69, also known as deep flow technique (DFT), floating raft technology (FRT), or raceway, is one of the simplest active hydroponic systems.4 In this method, plant roots are suspended directly in a reservoir of nutrient-rich water that is continuously oxygenated.4 Oxygen is typically supplied through an air pump connected to an air stone placed in the reservoir.4 This system is particularly well-suited for growing leafy greens and herbs.66 DWC offers the advantages of simplicity and relatively low maintenance once established.69 A variation of this is Recirculating Deep Water Culture (RDWC), where the nutrient solution is circulated among multiple reservoirs, enhancing nutrient availability and reducing the need for individual bucket maintenance.63 A potential drawback of DWC is the constant submersion of roots, making consistent oxygenation vital to prevent drowning.61

Leafy greens are among the most commonly and successfully grown plants in hydroponic systems.2 This category includes various types of lettuce (such as butterhead, romaine, and oak leaf), spinach, kale, arugula, Swiss chard, bok choy, mustard greens, and microgreens. These plants generally have relatively short growth cycles and are well-suited to the efficient nutrient delivery of hydroponic systems.25

Herbs also thrive in hydroponic environments.2 Popular choices include basil (in its various forms), mint, cilantro, parsley, dill, rosemary, sage, thyme, oregano, and chives. Many herbs have compact root systems and modest nutrient requirements, making them ideal candidates for hydroponic cultivation.25

Fruiting vegetables also perform well in hydroponic systems, although they may require more space, light, and careful nutrient management.57 Common examples include tomatoes (various types), peppers (bell and hot varieties), cucumbers, strawberries, beans, peas, eggplant, and smaller melons like cantaloupe and watermelon.2 Some fruiting plants, like tomatoes and melons, may require manual pollination when grown indoors where natural pollinators are absent.117
